How to Make a Fire in a University

2014

How to Make a Fire in a University is a culmination of a five-month dialogue with the Health and Safety department at the University of Brighton. This began with a proposal for an open fire in the studio, as a way to examine the process of health and safety and its effect on art made in institutions. By choosing the most extreme and dangerous material, this intended to show the most drastic change from the original proposal. However, by thoroughly considering the risks and including necessary precautions – such as the presence of a fire warden - a controlled fire was able to take place on the 31st March 2014.
